Rita Joe
Rita Joe was a Mi'kmaq poet born on March 15th, 1932 in Cape Breton. When she was 12 she went to the Shubencadie Residential School at attended it until grade 8. Rita began writing peotry in the late 60's and went on to publish seven books, her first in 1978. Many of her peoms reflected her culture and her experiences.
In 1954 Rita married Frank Joe. They had eight kids together as well as adopted two. In 1989 she was named to the Order of Canada and in 1997 she recieved the National Aboriginal Acheivement Award. She won many other awards as well. Rita died in 2007 from Parkison's . disease.
